Chapter 1: The Fork

The review went up at 6:04 a.m., which meant Wren Callahan read it standing in her kitchen in yesterday's chef whites, coffee going cold in her hand, before she'd even had the chance to decide whether today was a good day. It was not, as it turned out, a good day. "Marrow wants badly to be taken seriously," the review began, "which is, ultimately, its most serious problem." Wren read that sentence four times. She read the rest of it twice. By the third pass she had stopped tasting her coffee entirely and started composing furious, unsendable replies in her head, each one better and more devastating than the last, none of which mattered, because The Fork — whoever The Fork was — did not have a comments section, did not have a face, did not have anything but a byline that ran in the city's biggest paper and enough readers to fill or empty a dining room overnight. By nine, three of her five brunch reservations had cancelled. By noon, her sous chef Priya was reading the review out loud in a increasingly unconvincing British accent, ostensibly to make Wren laugh, actually because Priya could not stop rereading it herself. "'The scallop dish arrives with such unearned confidence that one almost admires the nerve of it,'" Priya read, and then broke, laughing despite herself. "Wren. Wren, this is genuinely a good sentence. I hate that it's a good sentence." "I don't want to hear that it's a good sentence." "I'm just saying, whoever The Fork is, they can write." "They can also apparently taste nothing," Wren said, "because that scallop dish sold out every night for a month before this ran." She meant to sound imperious about it. She suspected, from the look on Priya's face, that she had instead sounded like someone standing very close to the edge of something. Three months of preparation. Two years of savings. A restaurant with her name over the door in nothing but a sans-serif font and pure, foolish nerve — and one anonymous critic could take a scalpel to all of it before most of the city had finished their first coffee. Wren didn't cry. She had promised herself, when she signed the lease, that she would not become a person who cried in her own kitchen. Instead she went very quiet, which Priya knew, after four years of working together, was worse. "I'm going to find out who they are," Wren said, finally. "You say that every time someone writes something mean about the restaurant." "I mean it this time." "You meant it the other times too." Wren didn't answer. She was already thinking, in the specific, dangerous way she thought about kitchen fires and cash-flow problems, about how a person hides a byline for three years running and what it would take to make them stop. She did not know, standing in her kitchen that morning, that The Fork had just signed a twelve-month lease on the apartment directly across the hall from hers, and would be moving his boxes in that same afternoon.
