The Cartographer's Compass
by Callum Reyes · Ongoing · 15 chapters · ★ 4.3 (39 ratings)
Reese Halloway has spent her career restoring other people's reputations while quietly defending her grandfather's ruined one. Forty years ago, Elias Halloway claimed he'd found the lost trailhead of a Spanish silver expedition deep in Mexico's Sierra Madre — and was laughed out of the archaeological establishment for it. When reclusive treasure-hunter Jonah Vance shows up at her archive with her grandfather's water-damaged final journal and a check that could save her family's house, Reese tells herself this is just a translation job. It isn't. The route hides in riddles only a Halloway could untangle, the mountains do not forgive mistakes, and Marcus Whitfield — the man who destroyed Elias's career to protect his own family's legacy — is already in the field with a bigger team and fewer scruples. Reese and Jonah have exactly one thing in common: neither of them trusts easily, and both of them have already lost too much to this mountain range. As switchbacks turn to washouts and the rival camp closes in, the two of them will have to decide how much of themselves they're willing to hand over — to the expedition, to each other, and to a truth that might vindicate her grandfather or finish what Whitfield started.
